Tutorials
Photography is a long term love affair and so many people share this interest, some of us merely to capture family moments, some to try and hold memories of the great outdoors and God's amazing creatures. Other's of us choose to make a career of it but fundamentally our passion is still the same...an art form that captures what is already given to us. A way to freeze time, to hold a feeling, to crystallize our dreams...
So I've decided to start teaching again. I will be putting up tutorials both written and eventually video as well.
So begins our journey, if you would like to stroll along with me...
Aperture
Shutter Speed
ISO
These are your three essentials when it comes to understanding photography....
So lets start with Aperture which is the little A on your camera menu, usually on your top left...
When you put your Camera onto A (Aperture Mode) you are choosing to control your DOF (Depth of Field)
This can be confusing but DOF is really just the blurry pretty bubbly stuff in your pictures that makes your subject stand out. This is great for pics of your kids, macro work or making something the obvious focus of the image.
Your aperture is measured in F numbers on your camera... the lower the number the lower the DOF and the Wider your Lens Aperture is....the normal people speak for this is that the lower your number (ie F4) the more cool blurry stuff you get in the background...like below
Here the Aperture was F2.8 (which depends on your lens but mostly you will have access to F4)
This means that there was hardly any depth to the photo so her left eye is in focus but her right eye is already blurring into the fuzz.
It is really an amazing way to get your subject to stand out!
On the other hand - the higher you go with your Aperture number like
F8 or higher the more your DOF becomes and in human speak...
The higher the F number the more stuff is in focus!!!
Therefore this is great for scenery or when you want a family pic with all of the background also nice and sharp and easy to see....like on holiday when you want a clear image of the sea behind your munchkin!

So there you have a very simple answer to the idea behind Aperture!!!

Shutter Speed (aka Motion Blur)
So lets talk about shutter speed....this is exactly what is sounds like the speed at which the shutter closes.
Do you ever get really blurry photos?
This is one, however this one was done for effect to get a feeling of the party and the lights. So don't necessarily discount all that blur!
The Exposure Triangle

Okay let's talk about the classical waterfall image. This one keeps popping up
the first image is the beautiful waterfall frozen in time and the second is the glorious fuzzy flowing water that seems like a veil of mist.
So how do they do it???
Not hard at all I promise!
The first one is frozen in time so to speak meaning that the shutter speed was very fast freezing the little water drops...
The second one has more movement in the image and the shutter speed was slower allowing time for the camera to capture the movement in the water.
So we have covered the first two corners of our triangle...
Aperture - Fuzzy background or all in focus
and
Shutter Speed - Blurry waterfall or crazy dance scene or sharp in focus sport shot
